thoses are just some variations of TIM2 formats, the things you call mode 3 and mode 5 are just part of TIM2 header that discribe the incoming data storage format , something like 3 = rgb and 5 = rgb+a for ppt (image palette indices data) and the same for the ppc (image palette)
