well both samples are working for me without any fixes or changes...so i cant debug anything
anyway going thru the posts i notice most of you have MERGE_SCENE = 1 , its really not needed for most cases and i would turn it off unless you are trying to comine multiple models in the same file

It happened when i enter Spongebob Models from Granny 3d engine 2 viewing.
The decompression@24 error means it identified the compression at bitknit but current .dll dosent have the required functions to decompress it.
Iv seen someone already post that a new .dll version solved his issues and it should...
you can upload you sample and ill see if there is anything special about it.
I have a question about the Diablo 2 files, maybe someone can help me. Since I can now open them in noesis I noticed that the sorceress doesn't load or export textures for the body. If I load the sorceress head only the hair is textured the head torso arms and legs (that also load) are not. It's not a super huge problem, except that the texture doesn't get converted and exported. If it did I could just manually add the texture in blender. It seems also that all of the "light" armor options for sorceress do not load textures. If there is a way to just convert the .texture files that would help me also.
TL:DR -light armor sorceress textures do not load or export also head and body textures. All sorceress files with *_lit_LOD_* do not load.

Cubes preview
I think this is specific objects (cubes) of that particulaer game. it can't be fixed. you will need remove them manually in blender, 3ds max, cinema4d or whatever
I offered to look at your files.
That way I could give you a quick answer.
